A Father and Son’s Story of Overcoming Addiction

Wherever you are in the world, there is an epidemic happening all around you. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a big city or a small town—or whether you’re poor or wealthy—drug abuse and addiction is everywhere and it seems to be getting worse.

In 2018, Haven Today shared a program series very personal for Charles and his wife, Janet called Grace for an Addicted World. On the 15th anniversary of losing their son to a drug overdose, Janet and Charles shared their story on-air.  Haven Today also shared stories from others who have encountered Christ amid their own devastating struggles with addiction.

One of these stories comes from Buffalo, NY. We’re sharing it on part 3 of this series, but we didn’t have enough space to share the whole thing. Here is the uncut interview I did with Neil Boron, who hosts an afternoon talk show on WDCX called Lifeline, along with his son Zach, who now works with is dad at the radio station as the show’s producer.

It’s an inspiring story about a son who became overwhelmed with addiction and a father who cried out to the Lord for help. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit intervened.

SavingALife-productDrug addiction is running rampant in our neighborhoods and many of our homes. If it’s not you or your family, then it’s probably someone you know. I want to encourage you to listen to the full series this on how the Lord intervenes for those caught up in addiction. But I also want to encourage you to read a book by Janet and me about our oldest son who died of a drug overdose. It’s called Saving a Life.

We didn’t want to write something full of platitudes. We were still grieving. Instead of writing a book full of steps on how you can help someone, or how you can even help yourself, this book is an honest look into the raw and ugly pain that addiction brings. The problem is we can’t save ourselves or the ones we love—but there is someone who can.

Throughout this book, you will see our journey and read the tangible ways that the Holy Spirit has given us hope and courage in our lives. It’s our hope that you find the strength to stand up against addiction through the power of Jesus. His grace is for people struggling with addiction, as well as those who pray for them.

My son, Christian James, went to be with the Lord 5 years ago yesterday, because of addiction! I am now in a group called Umbrella Ministries who minister to Moms who have lost children and also in a signing choir called “Love In Motion” in which I travel to Umbrella Conferences to bless others who have lost children and loved ones. Im now my son’s legacy, and I let his life shine for the glory of the Lord! Bless you Charles and family for your wonderful ministry! I look forward to reading your book!

Thank you for sharing your and Christian’s story with us here. Umbrella Ministries and Love in Motion sound like tremendous outlets for carrying on your son’s legacy. I also wanted to let you know I’ve passed your note along to Charles.
