"Jesus answered, 'Unless I wash you, you have no
part with me.'"
(JOHN 13:8B)

John 13:1-17
We surprised a children’s church group at church one Lenten season by getting out basins and washing their feet. I knelt in front of a young girl who removed her sock but covered her toenails with her hand. I washed the area she exposed, spoke the blessing, and moved on. But her actions struck me. Whatever prompted her embarrassment, she did not want to expose those toes to me.

Peter felt similarly. He couldn’t stand the thought of Jesus washing his dirty feet. He felt ashamed to have his Lord do the servants’ work. But Jesus wasn’t going to just give His people a kiss on a clean cheek. He was going to clean the places that truly were grimy…dirty…ugly. He would become the servant for Peter and for us.

Unlike this girl in children’s church, we do not have to hide the dirtiest parts of our hearts from Christ. He wants to wash us clean from the basin of His endless mercy, leaving us smelling like the aroma of Christ. Only once we’ve exposed these places and have them washed by Jesus, can we have a part with Him.
