“At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.”

John 20:14
Though Mary expected to see Jesus as she went to the tomb, she certainly did not anticipate seeing Him alive. She’d come with spices to properly anoint His body. His appearance was so unexpected, she didn’t even recognize Him until He spoke. Jesus still wonderfully comes in ways we do not expect.
Our son had a creative and enthusiastic Bible study leader who was an inspiration to him. When we met, he shared with us how most of his life he’d been a university professor who was skeptical of Christianity. One Sunday as he was taking a walk, he happened to pass a church while people were going in. He was intrigued and entered to see what foolish ideas were being presented. Instead of “foolishness,” he heard the gospel. God spoke to his heart, and he trusted Jesus as his Savior. It was truly an unexpected encounter with the Lord!
Where might you encounter Jesus? He comes unexpectedly in your time of loss, difficulty, or confusion. He’ll meet you where you are, even if you have been avoiding Him. May He surprise you today.
