"Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord."
(2 PETER 1:2)

Job 38:1-40:5
I recently spent a weekend in the desert with 30 middle school kids. From them I learned an easy way to find scorpions at night. If you shine a black light on a scorpion in the dark, it glows an iridescent green; it can’t hide!

As our reading today illustrates, the knowledge of God alone does not bring grace or peace. In fact, it brings the exact opposite: guilt and dread. Job’s encounter with God left him speechless and painfully aware of his inherent unworthiness. Like a scorpion under a black light in the presence of an all-powerful, all-knowing God, our lack of holiness cannot be hidden.

But when we come to know Jesus as both our Savior (which is what “Jesus” means) and Lord, grace and peace are poured out on us in abundance. The verb here is passive, indicating that grace and peace are given to us. We know grace: Jesus took God’s wrath for our sin on the cross. We also know righteousness: His perfect record of obedience to the Father is given to us. That gives us a peace in which we can safely hide.
