"May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify... God..."
(ROMANS 15:5-6)

Romans 14
A familiar catechism question asks, “What is the chief end of man?” The answer is “to glorify God and enjoy him forever.” Of course, the catechism is only summarizing what Scripture teaches: that we are created to glorify God.

All too often we think of this in individualistic terms; we think our way of glorifying God is the only way. Paul shows us how a vegetarian Christian is prone to look down on a meat-eating Christian and vice versa. Both approaches to eating glorify God; both are to be acknowledged in the same church. We are called to glorify God individually but also together, as we all follow Jesus. To do that, Paul says, we will need a spirit of unity.

Perhaps you’d like a secret method for developing a spirit of unity in your church. I am glad Paul doesn’t give that. Instead he roots our call to unity in the assurance that God will grant us the very thing we need so that together we may glorify Him! The blessing of unity comes from God to us so that our praises can go from us to Him!
