"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is
the kingdom of heaven."

(MATTHEW 5:3)

Matthew 5-6
Between the seaside towns of Tabgha and Capernaum, above a spot called the “Cove of the Sower” on Mount Ermos, there is a level area where thousands could gather. It is probably here that Jesus delivered the most famous sermon of all time. What a profound feeling to stand in that very spot and imagine being part of the crowd that day. Jesus would have looked out on the multitude of people from here. With great authority He then laid out His radical
kingdom commands.

If you’re wondering how you can possibly begin to live this way, don’t forget that before He gave a single command, Jesus pronounced the Beatitudes, the promises of blessing. Only then did He give His commands, covering topics from handling money to marriage, from murder to prayer. We can’t obey Jesus and live this radical new life just by trying, but we can humble ourselves and become “poor in spirit’ and then trust that the blessing of the Lord will be upon us. We can be assured that His Spirit will shape us into His image.
