Call to the Unknown

Anchor Devotional - 12.07.17

“‘Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you….’”

Genesis 12:1-2a

Following God is an adventure of faith. Sixteen years ago, we boarded a plane to our current mission field, Berlin, Germany. Unlike Abraham, we had a destination stamped on our tickets, while he was called into the unknown.

Sometimes God only calls us to the next step, moving us without our knowing every detail in order that we may find Him. But a call to one thing inevitably means loss of another. When my husband and I read the above text with our refugee friends one evening, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. Each person shared of the losses in their lives, losses of material possessions, comfort, family, and culture. Nadia shared that “without language I have no identity.” But the resounding chorus was that all the loss was worth it to them because they had found Jesus in the journey.

Paul summarized it similarly: “I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things.” (Philippians 3:8a). When all else is gone, you have Jesus!
