“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7
InterVarsity’s Campus by the Sea is located in Gallagher’s Cove, two miles up the Catalina Island coastline from the Avalon harbor. Accessible only by boat or a half-day hike from Avalon, its secluded nature makes it a sanctuary. With no phone service and no Wi-Fi there, a person disconnects from the bombardment of media and the weight of life. I remember first reaching that cove and feeling free to live in the moment, appreciating the natural beauty and the people around me with no interruptions. Similarly, it is only after we have been rid of our spiritual loads that we realize how heavy they were. After Christ sets us free, we realize how burdened we were and how welcomed we are in Him to enjoy the promises of His new creation and the hope of His spirit within us. It’s like one of the characters from John Bunyan’s Pilgrm’s Progress who understood how free he was after losing his burden at the foot of the cross. We, too, are free to give our cares to Jesus. We can allow our worship to resound with gratitude for His mercy and grace.
