"The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: 'I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn
you with loving kindness.'"
(JEREMIAH 31:3)

2 Samuel 1:17-27
How do you describe the love of God? Scripture often defines it in terms of relationships between people. David spoke of his love for his best friend Jonathan as “wonderful.” A glimpse of God’s wonderful love to me is seen in the purest forms of love we have for each other.

I hear it when my aging friends coo in loving description of their grandchild. I see it when a mother shares the joy of being with her pre-school daughter for lunch each day. I see the love of God in the moments a father spends with his son after work, listening and discussing nothing in particular. I see the love a man has for his wife as she comes forward to be with him at their wedding. I am moved by the love in an aging husband’s tears when his wife has gone to be with the Lord.

Wonderful is the love of a father who ran to meet his prodigal son who was “lost” but now is “found.” Wonderful is the love of a Samaritan who stopped and cared for an injured stranger. But perfect is the deep, everlasting love God has shown us in Jesus.
