"The Lord sends poverty and wealth;
he humbles and he exalts."
(1 SAMUEL 2:7)

1 Samuel 2:1-11
Mother’s Day seems like a perfect time to take a look at a biblical mom whose trust in, reliance on, and enjoyment of God are heartening to all of us.

We can learn much from Hannah. For many years she pleaded with the Lord. And God – in His perfect timing – blesses her life, giving her and her husband a child, Samuel. In her prayer she humbly acknowledges God’s uniqueness, justice, power and sovereignty. Praise flows from her heart for God’s nature, His all-knowing wisdom, for being in control of His world. She warns those who are proud of God’s ability to humble them (“he humbles and he exalts”). Hannah is thankful for Samuel, with joy in her Lord that any good parent knows. She knows she has been delivered from disgrace to a position of honor and strength (“my horn is lifted high”). Beautiful! For that’s exactly what Jesus has done for us.

We humbly declare the same thing and gratefully sing the words of the old hymn, “Grace, grace, God’s grace – grace that will pardon and cleanse within”
(Julia H. Johnston, 1911).
