“But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.”

Psalm 5:11
Ever been in conversations with others as they consider names for their babies? Each generation seems to come up with new and more interesting name creations. Often the names have no bearing on who the child is, but we say that we “love that name” anyway. In Psalm 5 we see that to love the name of the Lord is to love the Lord. That is saying a lot!
When we love God’s name, we acknowledge that He does not take pleasure in evil (v. 4), that He hates all who do wrong (v. 5), and that He destroys those who tell lies (v. 6). Sound a bit unsettling? I know I am guilty on all three counts. If you search your heart, you’ll admit you are, too.
But this same holy God allows us to come into His presence by His great mercy (v. 7). He leads us in righteousness (v. 8). When we admit our guilt and come to Him, He becomes our refuge (v. 11). He blesses us and is our shield (v. 12). Instead of casting us off, He spreads His protection over us (v. 11).
Do you love the name of the Lord? It overflows in grace that is greater than all our sin!
