“Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”James 4:14
As I was writing today’s thoughts, I was gazing at a wedding picture from 14 years ago and thought to myself, It seems like only yesterday we were getting married. Time is flying by! This passage from the book of James came to mind. He tells us our lives are but a mist—you’re here for a bit and then gone. Our lives are like the morning fog which appears and then dissipates with the rising sun.
Sometimes we choose to live in the past and see only our failures or successes. At other times we live boasting about the expectations of what tomorrow will bring. Along the way, are we forgetting to live in the reality of the present with the assurance that we have been saved by grace?
My Cuban friends live with great expectation of future changes, sometimes boasting about how their country will change eventually. We all tend to forget that only “if it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that” (v. 15). The God of the universe knows His plans for our lives, lives that are here today but may be gone tomorrow.
“The future is as bright as the promises of God.” (William Carey, 1761-1834)
