No Turning Back

Anchor Devotional - 02.27.19

“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.”

Acts 3:19

Does the saying “never say never” mean something in your life? It does in mine. Once I retired from Corrections, I vowed to never set foot in a prison again. I didn’t want to go through the three gates as a visitor or a volunteer. Then I helped launch a new church that meets—you guessed it!—in a prison. I became a volunteer so I could attend a worship service with the prisoners and other volunteers. Volunteers link the outside world and prison by expanding programs that employees don’t have time to provide.

The first time I went into the prison as a volunteer, I entered the classroom where the men in their blue uniforms were singing, “I have decided to follow Jesus./ No turning back,/ no turning back.” My heart was deeply moved as I sang along with these people whom I no longer saw as part of my job, but now as fellow travelers on the road to heaven.

Some prisoners will commit more crimes. Every one of us turns away from Jesus at times in our own ways. We’re broken and in need of grace. He is there beckoning us to turn back to Him.
