Not Ashamed!

Anchor Devotional - 08.07.18

“I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.”

Romans 1:16

The Bible is clear that we need not be embarrassed of the gospel. Though he had much in his past personal life to be ashamed of, Paul spent ten years establishing churches throughout the Mediterranean world. He shamelessly witnessed to the Christians in Rome of the transforming power of the risen Christ in him.

Paul was writing from Corinth, a city with widespread corruption, where his message was considered foolishness to the Greeks and a stumbling-block to the Jews. Despite being imprisoned in Philippi, chased out of Thessalonica, smuggled out of Berea, and laughed at in Athens, Paul knew the importance of being bold in faith. Because of Christ, he was victorious over all that men could do to Him. He was not ashamed.

Sometimes God places us in situations where the Christian faith is disparaged and mocked. Jesus knows what jeering ridicule feels like. But because He conquered that and death, we can “be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have” (1 Peter 3:15).

Insight

Today Christianity is pitted against hostile evil influences that are committed to removing it. Counter that with boldness for Jesus.
