"Train a child in the way he should go, and when
he is old he will not turn from it."
(PROVERBS 22:6)

Deuteronomy 7:9-26
My friend Bruce and I started our life sentences together at Corcoran Prison back in 1989. Bruce had two young sons whom he visited with regularly throughout the years. He firmly believed God and His promises, and he trained up his boys in his faith. Can you imagine the challenges of making that real to his children while he was behind bars? Every visit they would pray together and read the Bible. Bruce would teach them how to apply the Bible to their lives. What a witness this was to us prisoners, to other visitors and to the
prison guards!

Bruce and I recently ran into each other in the visiting room back at the prison. With him was his oldest son – now in his mid-20s and a Christian – along with his fiancé! I love seeing the promises of God come true in our lives. Bruce could have figured, “I’m in prison, there is no way I can do what God wants me to do from in here.” Instead, he chose to obey and trust. Even now, 23 years later, Bruce is still training those boys, obeying and trusting in his Savior.
