"The LORD make his face shine upon you... the LORD turn his face toward you..."
(NUMBERS 6:25-26)

Zephaniah 3:17
When our children were little, they often called out, “Daddy, watch me!” Sometimes, I would stop what I was doing to watch them, but other times I could not. In the blessing of Numbers 6, God promises that He will never be too busy or too tired to look on His children with favor.

To me, this promise is remarkable because it came right after the Israelites had spit in God’s face by choosing to make and worship a god of their own imagination, a golden bull. Of course, each time I choose to go my way rather than God’s, I spit in His face, too.

God is so different than us; His love is simply amazing. He promises to look on us with favor despite our arrogant rejection of Him. Rather than ignore our rejection, He sent His Son, Jesus, to receive the punishment our sin deserves. On the cross Jesus cried out, “My God, why have you forsaken me” (Mark 15:34)? But there was no answer. In that moment, God had turned His face away from His beloved son so He could turn His face toward us and rejoice over us with singing.
