"One day Jesus was praying... [and] one of his disciples said to him, 'Lord, teach us to pray...'"
(LUKE 11:1)

Luke 11:1-4
I grew up praying “The Lord’s Prayer.” It was probably the first scripture that I memorized. I could rattle it off without pause, without error, and without thinking about what I was saying.

I’ve since prayed that prayer in English, Swahili, German, Spanish and even Greek. At 85 years old I finally find myself asking, “What in the world is that prayer all about?”

My paraphrase of the opening would be, “You established your kingdom in heaven based on your atoning work that cost you more than I can possibly imagine. Now the hosts of heaven rise in unison to praise your name. Jesus, may you be exalted and loved just like that by us on earth, in your kingdom here!” The closing words would be, “The kingdom is yours with all the power and glory that attend it.”

Is it really true that we live in a kingdom on earth that is linked with the kingdom of heaven? Yes, without a doubt! Jesus rules both as one. I long for the day when God’s kingdom in and on earth will in fact become one in holy joy and eternal gratitude!
