“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.”

Philippians 3:12
I remember working with a United States Air Force officer who was deeply committed to Jesus and growing in his faith. After his service commitment, he was headed for seminary and ministry. In particular, I recall how he always carried his Bible with him; given a few minutes, there he would be, reading and memorizing God’s Word. He was pressing on to further grasp God’s call on his life. Since then, I also carry my Bible or Scripture memory cards wherever I go, ready for any moment I can spend in the Word. I’ve found this is one way that helps me “press on” in my journey with the Lord.
Twice in this Philippians passage, we are told to “press on.” Paul pressed on to know Jesus, to obey His teachings, and to be the new creation that God was making him to be. He pursued the prize of heaven the way an athlete pushes ahead to cross the finish line.
If Paul could leave his dreadful past behind, we too can move on from ours. Stay disciplined in your pursuit to further know and follow Jesus, the One who has taken hold of you!
