“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”

1 Corinthians 12:7
A previous pastor of mine would say to new members joining the church, “God has brought you to us because you have something we need.” I wondered why he said that until I came across 1 Corinthians 12:18. Here Paul teaches that “God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be,” all working together for the same thing.
In this passage Paul is talking about the various gifts God has given each of us for the benefit of the church. The list is large, containing leadership, service, giving, mercy, wisdom, teaching, administration, and hospitality, to name a few.
God has given you a divine gift, maybe even multiple gifts! Don’t just call it natural talent; these gifts were distributed to you by the Holy Spirit “for the common good”!
Remember the excitement of contributing to a win on a football team, or lending your voice in a choir, or being a part of a successful business deal with your co-workers? God has great work for you to do. Find your gift and experience the joy in it.
