He Restores My Soul

Anchor Devotional - 10.09.18

“Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.” Psalm 51:12

Psalm 51:1-12

The word “restore” has beautiful connotations—of bringing something back into its original state of being. You might restore an old car, a timeworn photo, or even a broken relationship. If something or someone is in need of restoration, then it is acknowledged that the item or person has fallen from the original condition. When David used the word “restore” in various psalms of his, he knew full well how he had fallen from where he ought to be.

Like you and me, David—the one called “a man after God’s own heart”—at times refused fellowship with God. He found his own heart wandering away from his loving Father. As his sin caught up with him, David came knowingly back to his Shepherd where his troubled spirit could find rest and total restoration in God’s forgiveness.

This same Savior redeems us from our state of ruin and restores us from the damage we do ourselves in our frequent wanderings. The downward path of life is easy; it picks up momentum. But on the steady, upward path with Jesus, true joy is restored.
