"May God himself... sanctify you... May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it."
(1 THESSALONIANS 5:23-24)

Romans 8:28-30
Some of the most compelling movies and books tell the stories of individuals who overcome all odds to succeed. It is only natural that we would think of sanctification in those terms. I would define sanctification this way: the process whereby God makes us more and more like Jesus. It continues throughout our lives until Christ comes again or until we go to be with Him.

The reality of this process, both according to Scripture and in our experience, is that no matter how hard we work, we can’t completely overcome sin. Sure, we put off particular sins for a season or even for the rest of our lives, but then we soon find ourselves wrestling again with anger, jealousy, or fear. If the success of our sanctification depends on our effort alone, then we have no hope, no movie, and no book. But as this benediction makes clear, it is ultimately God who completes our sanctification. He does it. This is our sure and ultimate hope. God called you to Himself, and He will make sure you are made fit for heaven.
