“Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: ‘The Lord knows those who are his,’ and, ‘Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.’”

2 Timothy 2:19
Prior to Jesus’ arrest, He prayed for the eleven remaining disciples and then for all believers. He knew exactly who these were, just as a father knows his own children. The Gospel of John records that God specifically gave these believers to Jesus. They were characterized by certainty of Jesus’ identity and true belief. They were ones who did not consider this world their home, but knew their citizenship was in heaven.
So what is it that distinguishes those who are “in Christ” from those who are not? In John 17, we find that believers enjoy the revelation of God through Jesus and that this brings glory to Him. Believers have a unity as they freely confess the name of Jesus and daily repent of sin. Jesus asks God to sanctify these believers through His Word. He closes His prayer by indicating that true believers know God sent Him to make the Father known. Finally, He wants those who are His to share in the love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
