“This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.”

John 2:11
Have you ever wondered why Jesus chose the miracle of turning water into wine to be His inaugural sign? How would that reveal His glory? Healings, exorcisms, and raising the dead are signs that sound to us more in keeping with His mission. But solving a social embarrassment? Providing wine in copious quantities (and excellent wine, no less!)? How extravagant! How impractical!
When we don’t understand God, it could be because our concept of God is too small. We might have begun to make Him into our own image—cautious, pragmatic, sensible, and thrifty. Scripture challenges our thoughts about God and reshapes them.
In this miracle Jesus reveals Himself to be the Lord of the coming feast, the marriage supper of the Lamb. Having drunk the wine of God’s wrath, He now provides the wine of joy and one day will take His place as the Bridegroom. And that means we are His Bride. He is preparing us even now to be revealed in splendor. We’re headed to a wedding! May all your days be marked by such joy.
