"To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven. He sighed deeply and said, 'Why does this generation ask for a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to it.'"
(MARK 8:11-12)

Matthew 12:38-42
Jesus sighed deeply in His spirit. Jesus understands frustration. The Pharisees were testing Him again to prove (or rather, disprove!) who He was. He’d been performing miracles all around, yet they wanted their own personal sign, one that would confirm their perception of what the Messiah was “supposed to be.”

I wonder if Jesus sighs at me sometimes. I suspect He does. Not unlike the Pharisees, I want Him and the life He has given me to be a certain way, and sometimes it isn’t exactly what I think it should be. So I too, in effect, ask for a sign from Jesus to prove His love for me again. I beg Him for the life I think I signed up for, neglecting to see what He has providentially planned for me and set right before me.

When the Christian life has you in a “bubble” of frustrations and expectations, let your heart center on the miraculous sign already given by Jesus Christ. The deep sighs of His love for us would take Him all the way to the cross to bear our sins for us. We need no greater proof of who He is!
