For to us a child is born, to us a son is given…. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6
Some time ago every get-together for our family found my daughter and daughter-in-law discussing baby names. Their due dates were only two days apart, so the conversation ranged from names in our ancestry to names of sports personalities.
Can you imagine Mary and Joseph pondering the Child’s name? They didn’t need to; they were to give Him the name Jesus, “because he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). We look at our newborn Emmas, Olivias, and Avas… our baby Ethans and Noahs and Liams, wondering what the little ones will grow up to be. Though Mary and Joseph couldn’t immediately know what was ahead for their baby, they were certain of one thing: He was the promised One who would save everyone (even them!) From their sins.
God “gave him the name that is above every name” (Philippians 2:9b). He would grow up to be known by many other names as well… Master, Teacher, Lord, the Christ. Remember that His name is found right in the title of our holiday celebrations. So keep the “Christ” in “Christmas!”
