After just two years of marriage, we have already forgotten what it was like to live single lives. I fear sometimes being separated from the person I love most. It begins to make sense to me that ones who’ve shared long lives with each other on earth often ask to be buried together. They seek to let nothing separate them, even in death.


In the story of Ruth and Naomi, a daughter-in-law makes a promise (although not a wedding vow) to her mother-in-law to stay with her, to bind herself to Naomi’s God and, at death, to be buried with her. Ruth places all her hope and future in Naomi’s God.


As the Church of Jesus Christ, we do the same. We place all our hope in the One whose love was stronger than death – the very penalty He paid to purchase us. Our wives and husbands can never accomplish for us what Christ has won for His Bride. Jesus’ resurrection assures us that we will never be separated from Him. Trouble and hardship, even death, may come. But none of these can undo Christ’s all-consuming love for us.
