Shortly after September 11, 2001, a good friend and U.S. Army Major was assigned to manage security at the airports in Iowa. I had occasion to accompany John as he drove to check on his troops throughout the state. During those hours, we discussed the threat of terrorism and how a Christian should respond. John shared that Psalm 27:1 was his way of handling fear.
When David wrote Psalm 27, he could not have known what his declarations of confidence in the Lord then would mean for many of us believers now. We see that there is a way to overcome fear. The Lord Himself is all we need. God shines in the darkness, dispelling shadows. He is our stronghold, the fortress of our life.
Though we’re up against much evil in this world, God is more than adequate. The words of the song “God and God Alone” remind us that He is in control. “All the best and worst of man/ can’t change the master plan./ It’s God’s and God’s alone” (Phil McHugh, 1984). And if God is for us, no weapon formed against us will prevail (see Isaiah 54:17).
