“Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you— guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.”

2 Timothy 1:14
There is nothing like idolatry to spoil a perfectly good gift from God! He gives you a spouse or a job or a hard but special providence—and you obsess over it, forgetting Him in the process! That’s exactly what I did with my deployment. I always thought I would draw closer to Jesus while overseas, regardless of how grounded I already was in His grace.
The opposite happened. In my presumption, I grew lazy toward God. Though I preached at least once, if not several times, a week, I didn’t meditate on the Word myself. I used busyness as an excuse and didn’t offer the people of my unit my best. Truthfully, I just assumed that the hardship of a deployment would magically make me more Christ-like.
In neglecting the Word and prayer, I neglected my first love. In presuming upon His providence, I ignored ordinary things—listening to preaching, taking the Lord’s Supper, remembering Bible reading and prayer—that would be key to my growth in Christ. Please do guard against this sort of temptation as it may arise in your own life.
