TASTE OF DEATH

“‘My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death...My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done’” (Matthew 26:38, 42).

Our one-year-old son clamped his mouth shut and refused the medicine he needed for pneumonia.
A nurse pried open his mouth, poured the liquid in, and held his lips together. When she let go, he spit the bright red liquid all over her white uniform.

In contrast, Jesus willingly accepted the cup full of horrid medicine that would heal humanity. His human nature recoiled at the coming physical and emotional pain. He knew He would suffer betrayal, rejection, and torture from those He created and loved. His divine nature felt appalling disgust for the sin that would engulf Him—the sin of every person who ever lived, including yours and mine.

Several Old Testament passages mention a cup full of God’s wrath against sin (Isaiah 51:17; Jeremiah 25:15). This is the bitter cup the Father God handed His beloved sinless Son.

Driven by selfless love, Jesus willingly took the cup and tasted death for us, fulfilling God's plan. Is anything more amazing?
